When a man dies horribly on the library steps, it appears that a plague has penetrated to the heartland. Sheriff Killebrew, fearful that the FBI will shut him out of the investigation in his own backyard, enlists the aid of Jake Gatter, a chemist, to find the cause of the bizarre death. As the number of victims grows, Killebrew discovers a connection among them while Gatter isolates the cause of the deaths. It is a genetically engineered bacterium being used as a murder weapon. The investigation into the victims turns up an unexpected relationship and precipitates three attempts on the lives of the investigators. The trail leads through a maze of seemingly unrelated clues until a startling exit opens under their very noses. And even the solution to the maze turns out to be but one more clue to the identity of the real culprit.
